Recalled By Life by Anthony J. Sattilaro, M.D. The Story of My Recovery From Cancer. Published by Houghton Mifflin Company, ISBN 0-395-32524-2
FROM THE BOOK'S DUST COVER:
It is June 1978. Dr. Anthony Sattilaro is a respected physician who, while still in his forties, is chief executive officer of Philadelphia's Methodist Hospital. His life seems idyllic - he has good friends, a rewarding career, and enjoys dining out, entertainment, and travel. But he's going to die.
His highly professional colleagues have left little doubt that he has terminal cancer, and he resigns himself to a painful future, a regimen of drugs, and only slim hope he will live to see fifty. Driving back to Philadelphia after the burial of his father, who has died of cancer, Sattilaro is deeply depressed and uncharacteristically picks up two young hitchhikers, one of whom dozes peacefully while the other makes idle conversation.
At a loss for small talk, Sattilaro imparts that he's living on borrowed time, and to his surprise he is told that his illness is curable if he'll go on a strange vegetarian diet. Though highly skeptical, he is intrigued by the young stranger's sincerity, and with nothing to lose, he follows up the lead. While still continuing his duties at the hospital, he rearranges his life to take his meals at a commune where only such foods as brown rice, whole grains, beans, fresh vegetables, fish and seaweed are served, and where a positive, spiritual approach to life is pervasive.
In just a few weeks, the back pain that has plagued him for years subsides, and in a matter of several months the course of his cancer has been reversed and his body is actually on the mend. Now, over four years later, there is no sign of cancer in his body; yet his healing goes well beyond the physical.
Dr. Sattilaro admits that he can find no medically acceptable explanation for his cure; he knows only that it has happened. He continues to support established methods and procedures of modern technological medicine, but his experience suggests that there are complementary approaches to health, and especially to cancer, that may also be beneficial. He began and ultimately found not only a cure but a sense of wholeness and spiritual fulfillment that he shares with the reader in this account of his remarkable experience. Dr. Sattilaro has passed his fiftieth birthday.
